Coffee with the Curator | Branching Out

Wood is one of the most versatile of materials. It can be malleable or rigid, light or dark, smooth or rough, young or old. Artists carve, cut, sand, sculpt, bend, bind, and burn it. "Branching Out" features a diverse selection of work created by artists across the state of North Carolina, ranging from wooden furniture to sculpture, as well as a variety of types of wood and techniques used to create these contemporary works. These artists “branch out” to create work out of wood in unique ways, expanding the possibilities within this familiar medium.

Coffee with the Curator | Photographs by Hugh Morton: An Uncommon Retrospective

Hugh Morton (1921–2006) was a prolific photographer who created an estimated quarter-million negatives and transparencies during his lifetime. Morton’s photographic legacy is preserved by the North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives in Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Morton’s photographs would come to be seen in countless publications—books, magazines, newspapers, and calendars, to name only a few—throughout eight decades. Some Morton photographs have been published many times over; many others, however, have never or rarely been seen. This exhibition highlights dozens of his lesser or unknown photographs alongside some of his classics.
