Art Lesson w/ Ms. Jennifer: Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

About the Artist. 

Vincent Van Gogh was born  March 30, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands. He decided as an adult to dedicate himself to making art, and spent the next ten years drawing and painting. He focused the later part of his career on painting landscapes. He is known for his vivid color and energetic brush strokes. His painting “Starry Night” is one of the most famous artworks today. 




Materials:

  • Watercolor paper

  • Crayons or oil pastels

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • A strip of dark blue or black construction paper

  • Watercolor paints

  • Brush

  • water

Instructions: 

  1. Using white and yellow crayons or oil pastels on white paper, draw a moon, stars, and swirling clouds in the sky. It may be difficult to see these colors on your white paper, but they will show up with more contrast once you paint!

  2. Wash (paint) over the page with dark blue and/or black watercolor paints.

  3. Set aside to dry.

  4. Now on your strip of dark paper, using a white crayon, draw the outline of a hill, houses, maybe a snowman’s silhouette.

  5. Cut out your outline of the hill etc. leaving the entire bottom portion in one piece.

  6. Apply glue to the side with the outlines. Flip it over and glue the bottom piece onto your watercolor background.

  7. Using crayons or oil pastels, you can add highlights to the bottom paper.

  8. Don’t forget to sign your masterpiece!

For Doodlebugs Ages 2-5:

  1. Using white and yellow crayons or oil pastels, draw a moon, stars, and swirling clouds in the sky.

  2. Wash over the page with dark blue and/or black watercolor paints.
